Jim Bacon: The Republican Base is More Energized and Angry Than Anytime Since the Tea Party

Jim Bacon: The Republican Base is More Energized and Angry Than Anytime Since the Tea Party

Today The Two Mikes talked with Jim Bacon, who covers Virginia politics and cultural struggles with a keen and always accurate eye.

We spoke with Jim about ten days ago and he said that his perception was that the state’s Republican base was more energized and angry than at any time since the birth of the Tea Party.

He turned out to be correct and Youngkin won a slim victory by 1.5-percent of the vote.

Mr. Bacon said that while he was not surprised by the Republican win, he was surprised at the slimness of the vote, and that a word to the wise for the Republicans would anything more be not to trumpet anything more than a victory as the Old Dominion has not reliably returned to the red column.

He also noted that there was little sign of rigging in the election, though the early shutdown of vote counting in vote-rich Fairfax County merits remembering.

The Two Mikes said that the small-size of the victory and the Fairfax County incident ought to make Youngkin seek an audit of the election.

Mr. Bacon closed with a description of a brewing revolt among the alumni of major Virginia universities — including UVA, Washington and Lee, and VMI — against the political correctness of the state’s universities, as well as their ferocious attacks on free speech on campus.

Graduates of the three universities have formed an organization to fight these lamentable conditions, and have been joined by like-minded alumni from Davidson College in North Carolina, Princeton in New Jersey, and Cornell in upstate New York.

MIT Boston. We asked Mr. Bacon to come back and speak with us again as this alumni revolt progresses.

It’s noteworthy to check out what’s on the grill with Bacon.
